miles away at the southern extremity. Immediately north of Big Round Top was Little Round Top. Lee’s Lines, starting at Culp’s Hill and moving through Gettysburg, then southward down Seminary Ridge, ended slightly beyond Big Round Top. The Confederate line was slightly more than six miles; the Union lines were four miles. The Union held the high ground. General Richard Ewell’s Second Corps comprised the left of Lee’s line; a. P. Hill’s Third Corps, the center; and James Longstreet’s First Corps the right. Longstreet faced both Big and Little Round Tops. Lee, over the vehement objections of Longstreet, determined that the Round Tops should be attacked while Ewell simultaneously attacked Culp’s Hill. Hill was to support either Longstreet or Ewell. Longstreet’s strategy was to flank the Round Tops and get between the Federal Army and Washington, a strategy unacceptable to Lee. The direction of the attacks having been determined, Longstreet designated John B. Hood’s Texans to attack Big Round Top. Little Round Top was to be the objective of McLaw’s Division, which included Barksdale’s Mississippians. Barksdale’s brigade arrived at the front between nine and ten o’clock on the morning of July 2. Precisely at eleven thirty it was ordered to march down Seminary Ridge to its assigned position.
