Title
653CF6 - BOOK FITTING
Description
English: A late medieval to post-medieval copper alloy book fitting dating circa 1400-1600AD. The artefact is made of a single plate, is rectangular in plan, tapering outwards to a wider measurement at the opposite end from the hook. The hook is backward facing and would have fitted into an eye or similar, this clasping the book closed. There is a slightly wider rectangular section at the hook end of the clasp, measuring 10.56mm wide and 5.51mm long. The front face has two rivet holes 4.79mm apart at the wider end of the item and there is a surviving rivet 21.38mm from the hook end. There is the remains of some linial etched decoration on the outer face but also some verdigris and a split through the outermost rivethole. 56.76mm long, 9.29mm wide tapering to 16.05mm at the broken end. Weighs 4.10grammes.
