Summary

Description

The Café Gondrée sits in the village of Bénouville in Normandy, France. It's immediately next to what has become known as Pegasus Bridge. On the night of 5/6 June 1944 the first hand-to-hand fighting that Allied forces had with the defending Germans was here. It was very important that control of the river crossing be taken from the Germans, as part of the overall invasion plan.

After a fierce firefight between the forces the bridge was seized by British forces and by 6:20 am the adjacent cafe was no longer under control of the Germans. Arguably it was the first French house to be liberated. After the war the cafe was renamed to reflect its' involvement in the liberation of France.

Every year on 6 June surviving veterans come here to remember and honour those who fell. The cafe and adjacent bridge attract visitors all year round as well.

The historical importance of the cafe is described here: <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caf%c3%a9_Gondr%c3%a9e" rel="noreferrer nofollow">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caf%C3%A9_Gondr%C3%A9e</a>
