Title |
5527F1. Mesolithic tranchet axe. Lithic implement. |
||
Description |
English: Mesolithic tranchet axe. Long, oval axe with an oval cross section. Made on a narrow nodule of gravel flint. Mid grey flit with occasional white and dark grey mottles. Mid gloss, slightly milky patina. Cortex is present at the butt end and two thirds along one face. The cortex is weathered and stained brown. The the butt end there are traces of earlier, greyish white patination indicating earlier breakage of the nodule. The axe is extensively flaked along both edges. The flakes are broad. The cutting edge is formed by similar broad flaking on one face, and the removal of a tranchet (transverse) flake on the other. Late mesolithic. |
