Summary
[edit]Description53-365 - Flickr - eugevon.jpg |
Day 53 of 365. The H.C. Capwell's (aka Sears) building at Broadway and 20th in Oakland is undergoing its own mini-gentrification process. Originally a department store, it suffered damage in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. After a hasty seismic retrofit and remodel which disguised most of the facade, the building changed ownership a few times and was a sad Sears most recently. Now it has been sold to developers who are gutting the inside and out and plan to turn it into a tech and financial services hub. Construction crews have removed half of the building's exterior. Notably, you can see how many original windows (on the right) were covered up. The building's "evolution" reminds me of How Building Learn: What Happens After They're Built, a book and television series by Steward Brand. This is what the building originally looked like: ww1.hdnux.com/photos/24/31/67/5348844/3/920x920.jpg OaklandWiki gives a more detailed history of the building: localwiki.org/oakland/H._C._Capwell_Company Update: Uber just announced that it is fully leasing the building. ww2.kqed.org/news/2015/09/23/uber-comes-to-oakland-in-a-b... 53/365 #365project |
