Title
4F3A97b roman brooch
Description
English: Roman copper alloy and enamel horse and rider 'baton holder' brooch, 23mm long and 20mm high. The brooch weighs 3.19grams and is in a fair condition, but is quite worn. The brooch consists of a right facing horse and rider decorated with cells of red and blue enamel. The reverse shows the traces of two lugs at the horses rear, one at the upper edge and one at the lower. There is also the trace of a catchplate running from the horses front leg. The pattern most closely matches Hattatt type 160 and the one Ferris recorded from Rocester, Staffs, with one interesting difference. The Rocester example has red enamel cells at the front of the horse and under the rider, with blue filling the rest. This example is exactly the reverse.
