Title
445774.JPG Brooch
Description
English: Copper alloy Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch, 35mm long and 12mm wide. The brooch is incomplete, with only the animal head terminal (the upper half) present. The brooch appears to have been broken in antiquity as the edge is very worn. The reverse has part of a catch plate 20mm long attached. The upper part of the surface is decorated with a series of horizontal incised lines clumped together at intervals down its length. In the centre of the fragment are two thick raised lines, resembling a collar from which a horse's head emerges. This is oval, with two knobs forming eyes. The brooch has a green patina and appears worn. It dates to the later 5th or 6th century.
