Title
409 buckle plate.jpg
Description
English: Buckle Plate
 Medieval 1200-1450
Length 45mm, width 13mm, thickness 0.6mm

The artefact is made from sheet copper alloy, the sheet has been bent in half to form a back plate, there is a rectangular slot at the bend for the buckle pin, the back plate rapidly narrows from the bend so that it is only 5mm wide. The whole artefact is heavily corroded and as a result the decoration of the face is distorted to form a series of geometric linear markings that may have originally been foliage decoration. There is a rivet hole at either end and a copper alloy rivet is still in place in both holes.

The artefact has been gilt.

The object is in a very poor condition the original; surface has been corroded away leaving a light brown colour and the plate is in two separate pieces where the reverse has broken away from the face at the bend on the forward edge.

Although similar buckle plates have been found dating throughout the Medieval period, the decorative style would seem more suited to the Gothic style and therefore a date of 1200-1500 is most likely.
