Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A March 2021 view of the apartment building at 400 Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo, New York. The architecture of the building appends "stripped Classical" detailing of the type that was popular around the time of its construction (1925) - most notably, Corinthian pilaster strips spaced repetitively across both the façade and lateral elevations, as well as friezes above the ground-floor storefronts adorned with geometric ornamentation; unfortunately, the spindle balustrades along the roofline have been covered over and converted to a plain parapet - to a fairly utilitarian structure whose concrete-clad framing and brick curtain walls are more reminiscent of the industrial architecture of the era. Unusually, the interior of the building is divided into ten segments, each entirely self-contained and with its own separate entrance - round-arched and topped with fanlights - along the sides and at the back end of the extremely deeply recessed central courtyard. As of the building's inventory form filed with the New York State Division for Historic Preservation in 1979, these each had their own monikers: Morgan, Lee, Jackson, Stuart, Forrest, Buell, Siegel, Sherman, Grant, and Meade Halls.
