Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Granite obelisk which constitutes the 3rd Infantry Division Monument in Section 46 of Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, in the United States. In the background is the Canadian Cross of Sacrifice.

President George H.W. Bush signed legislation on September 29, 1988, approving the establishment of a memorial to the 3rd Infantry Division on the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery. The nine-ton grey granite obelisk, set about 15 feet back from the roadside, is inscribed with a dedication to the unit. A marker consisting of a bronze plaque attached to a grey granite stone sits by the walkway, and lists battles fought by the 3rd Infantry. The marker contains two typographical errors: It says "WW 1" (a numeral one, rather than a Roman numeral one), and "WW11" (two numeral ones, rather than two Roman numeral ones). The monument was dedicated on August 15, 1990.

In 1925, MacKenzie King, Prime Minister of Canada, proposed that Canada donate memorial to the cemetery to honor the large number of Americans who died while in the the service of the Canadian Armed Forces during World War I. President Calvin Coolidge approved the memorial on June 12, 1925. British architect Sir Reginald Bloomfield designed the memorial, which was dedicated on November 11, 1927. A 24-foot-high grey granite cross stands on a hexagonal base. A giant bronze sword is affixed to the front of the cross. An inscription honors those Americans who served Canada during World War I. Additional inscriptions honoring Americans who served in the Canadian Armed Forces in World War II and the Korean War were added later.
