The exact position and name of cave is withheld due to natural protection. The picture illustrates several speleothem morphologies and contains paleoclimate information. In the background one can see very thick columns, formed during successions of warm phases in the Pleistocene. To the right side several stalagmites are seen, while stalactites are generally rare because they are removed during cold phases when the cave fills with ice. The cave ice likewise has broken stalagmites and deposited them on the floor (visible on the floor at the right side of the cave). Brocken speleothems, often wrongly considered to be caused by earthquakes, are the traces of cave ice formed during glacial maxima (the last dating back to 20 000 years ago) when the annual temperatures in the area were 15°C lower than today and Germany suffered from deep-seated permafrost.
