Title |
38EF11. Medieval thimble |
||
Description |
English: Copper alloy, cast, domed thimble. The indentations or "holes" are hand stamped in a spiral pattern starting at the base. There is a plain rim arount the base and a blank area or "tonsure" at the crown. The indentaions are quite large indicating that this is a heavy duty thimble for use with coarser fabrics and leather (Holmes E.F., 1991, "Sewing Thimbles", Finds Research Group 700 - 1700 Datasheet 9, p. 2). There are several holes in the wall of the thimble. Holmes (ibib. p. 1) dates such thimbles to 1400 to 1550 and states that the "tonsure" is not found after 1650 (ibid. p. 3)
Dimensions: 20.36 mm height x 21.39 mm diameter x 0.72 mm wall thickness Weight: 10.79 g |
