Title
389 buckle plate.jpg
Description
English: Buckle plate

Medieval 1250-1450
Length 38mm, width 11mm, thickness 3mm

Triangular shape on plan. The pointed terminal is stepped, this may have formed a animal terminal but any detail has corroded away. The other end is slightly concave and there are the remains of two projections at either corner that would have been the side arms of the buckle, there is a large hole (3.5mm diameter) in the centre of this side that would have held the pin for the buckle. Two rivet holes in the centre (1.5mm diameter) would have attached the object to a strap, one of the holes still has the remains of a domed copper alloy rivet. Decoration comprises of a raised knotwork foliage design, occasional leafs are visible that could be ivy leafs, designs that are reminiscent of the illustrated manuscripts that date to the 13th and 14th century. The reverse is plain.

The artefact is copper alloy and is in a very poor condition. It has a mid brown colour with large patches of light green corrosion, on the upper side, light green on the reverse. The whole of the original surface has been corroded away and most of the detail is either been lost or is obscured.
