Title
387E20. Medieval buckle plate
Description
English: Copper alloy buckle plate.Sheet metal plate with two broken tabs at the proximal end where it would have attached to the missing buckle frame. The tabs are recessed from the edges of the plate to take the frame and there is a notch between where the pin would have articulated. The plate was secured to the belt or strap with two rivets towards the distal end. One copper alloy, circular sectioned, dome-headed rivet remains in the lower rivet hole. The plate is silvered and decorated with an engraved curvilinear repoussé design. This appears to have been cut through the silvered surface and the tool marks are very clear and regular so that they form a textured pattern giving the raised design slightly scalloped edges. The back is undecorated.

Dimensions: 35.13 mm x 15.71 mm x 0.73 mm (plate thickness) Rivet dimensions: 5.6 mm length. 2.41 shaft diameter. 4.09 mm head diameter. 2.03 mm head depth.

Weight: 2.05g
