Beginning the 4800 ft. climb from Phantom Ranch to the South Rim - on the S. Kaibab Trail. This 360 view is looking down at the Kaibab Suspension Bridge crossing a green Colorado River. The bridge was completed in 1928, and has a span of 440 ft. Panning to the right, a number of trail switchbacks are visible, climbing up through the red and black walls of metamorphic schist, Grand Canyon's "basement rocks". Continuing to pan right, the river again comes into view, along with the broad river delta where Bright Angel Creek meets the Colorado River. Bright Angel Campground and Phantom Ranch are between 1/2 and 3/4 of a mile up the side canyon above the delta. NPS/Michael Quinn Winter hikers at Grand Canyon should be prepared for cold temperatures, icy trails, and short daylight hours. NPS backcountry rangers recommend bringing over-the-shoe-traction devices, trekking poles, extra snacks, flashlights/headlamps, and layered clothing that can easily be added or removed to adapt to a variety of weather conditions. Stop by the Backcountry Information Center prior to your hike for a trail condition update, and pay close attention to the current weather forecast. |
