Title
340 BERK-7714F8: Roman knee brooch
Description
English: A complete cast copper alloy Roman knee brooch dating to the second century AD. The brooch has a semi-circular head whixh has roulette-type decoration on the outer edge. The head is set back from the main body of the brooch while at the foot the catchplate is extended. The bow is rounded in form and tapers towards the foot before expanding into a rounded but splayed foot, decorated with roulette-type patterning on the outer edge. The brooch as an under-foot nodule (Hattatt 1985:119) which is characteristic of examples from Pannonia (today located towards eastern Europe). The brooch appears to have a replacement spring and pin as these are of a different patina to the rest of the brooch. Similar, although no direct comparisons can be seen in Hattatt (1985 & 2007).
