English: 330-PS-9723 (428-GX-USN 710565): U.S. Navy Sixth Fleet Practices Amphibious Landing in Turkey. U.S. Marines show their bazooka to curious Turkish children during a landing exercise near Dikili, Turkey, on 3 October 1959. The Marines are attached to the Amphibious Task Force of the U.S. Navy’s Sixth Fleet. Two thousand Marines participated in the “assault” on the beach in the landing craft and helicopters, debarking medium tanks and artillery. Use of the landing site and maneuver areas Dikili for routine training exerices was authorized by the Turkish government. A group of general staff officers were embarked with the fleet to observe the operations, 9 October 1959. (9/30/2014). |
