English: 330-PS-9581 (428-GX-710478) Navy Sidewinder Missile Shoots Down Jet Drone, 11 July 1959. U.S. Navy Sidewinder Missile hits a KDA jet drone. Fired from a U.S. Navy A4D “Skyhawk,” the Navy designed missile homes on the heat emitted by the jet engine of the drone aircraft. The sidewinder is being built by Philco Corporation and General Electric Company, and the target drone is built by the Ryan Aeronautical Company. After being hit, the drone automatically ejects a parachute which lowers it to the ground or sea where it can be recovered for evaluation and reuse, 6 July 1959. Shown is a U.S. Navy rescue helicopter pulling the KDA target drone from the ocean to be used in another Sidewinder missile firing run. (7/10/2014) |
