Description
English: 330-PS-8952 (USN 710166): How Did It Feel…30 Days Underwater. This seems to be the question as Secretary of the Navy Thomas S. Gates, Jr., greets Commander James S. Calvert, USN, (left), and Commander Richard Lanning, USN, U.S. Navy submarine skippers who have just established a new record for length of time submerged. Under Secretary of the Navy, W.B. Franke, far right, looks on. Commander Lanning operated USS Seawolf beneath the surface of the seas for 30 days, while Commander Calvert and his crew remained submerged in USS Skate for 31 days and 5 ½ hours. During this period, the two submarines operated separately, cruising more than 8,000 statute miles. Photograph released May 28, 1958. (12/02/2014).
