Description
English: 330-PS-8155 (USN 1003756): Refugees board the first ship of the Military Sea Transportation Service to take part in the sea-lift of Hungarian refugees to the United States. The sea lift, which was ordered by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, started on December 19th, 1956, when the refugees boarded USS General LeRoy Eltinge (AP 154) at Bremerhaven, Germany. Eltinge, which arrived in New York, January 2nd with 1,751 refugees onboard is being followed by two additional ships due to arrive the following week. The refugees were from the Hungarian Revolution from October – November 1956 and were being transported to the United States. Photograph released January 4, 1957. (2/3/2015).
