English: 330-PS-7489 (USN 680156): Two pilots of USS Bennington (CVA 20) discuss the new mirror landing system which is designed to replace the landing signal officer on board carriers. Photograph released September 15, 1955. Master Caption: A new mirror landing system for landing aircraft at sea with mirrors and colored lights, undergoes its first American tests onboard USS Bennington (CVA 20). Based on an idea developed by the British Navy, the new landing system consists of a large concave mirror and banks of green and amber lights which indicate to the pilot his glide path and altitude in relation to the carrier. (2/25/2015). |
