Summary

[edit]
Description 330-PSA-70-64 (USAF 169511): Staib Trans-Atlantic North Pole Expedition 1964. Norwegian explorers, led by 25 year-old Bjorn Staib, are now on Ellsmere Island (Canadian Northwest Territory) making final preparations for their attempt to make the first surface traverse across the North Pole from northernmost Canada to Spitzbergen or the Severnaya Zemlya Islands off Siberia. Traveling on skis, Bjorn and three members of the 11 man expedition hope to complete the trek in 90 to 100 days. Sponsored by the National Geographic Society (which first won international attention by supporting Robert E. Peary’s trip to North Pole in 1909), the United States and the Norwegian armed forces, the National Science Foundation and the Arctic Institute of North America, the group plans for the 11 men and about 100 dogs to take food, equipment and other supplies on the initial 600 miles of the journey. From there four of the adventurers will make the dash across the Pole. Shown: team members unloading equipment and supplies from USAF C-130s which transported the group from Greenland to Ellsemere Island where the expedition will begin. Photograph released March 23, 1964. (2015/10/27).
