Summary

[edit]
Description 330-PSA-235-62 (USN 711120): A precise acoustical undersea system developed for the U.S. Navy for recording in detail the movements of large, high-speed marine fishes has been successfully tested. The system was tested early this month at sea near Palm Beach, Florida, where movements of 300-pound shark were tracked at distances of up to one and a quarter miles. The instrument, 10 ½ inches long, 2 ½ inches in diameter and weighing a little over one pound was attached to the shark behind its dorsal fin. The shark was released and tracked by a small boat carrying special range and direction finding equipment. The system was designed by the American Museum of National History, New York, under contract to the Office of Naval Research, August 24, 1962. (10/6/2015).
