Description 330-PS-732 (USN 707959): Navy Receives “Dorie Miller Foundation Award”. Elmer Fowler, President of the Dorie Miller Foundation, presented the Dorie Miller Foundation Award to Secretary of the Navy Francis P. Matthews. Secretary Matthews received the award on behalf of the personnel of the U.S. Navy. The award is made annually to persons and organizations outstanding in the field of race relations. The trophy, a large gold bow inscribed with the names of the recipients of the award to date, is a memorial to Dorie Miller who was awarded the Navy Cross for bravery onboard USS West Virginia during the Japanese Attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941.
