Description 330-PS-2848 (USN 706636): Captain Rickover, USN, Receives Award. Secretary of the Navy Dan A. Kimball, (right), inspects a model of the Navy’s atomic submarine, the Nautilus after presenting Captain Hyman George Rickover, USN, (left), the Gold Star in Lieu of the Second Legion of Merit Award at ceremonies in his office at the Pentagon. The award citation, in part, follows: “For exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the government of the United States as Chief of the Naval Reactors Branch, Division of Reactor Development, United States Atomic Energy Commission, and as Director of the Nuclear Power Division of the Navy, Bureau of Ships, from March 1949 to July 1952. Displaying exceptional talents in the field of mobile power reactor and exercising unceasing drive and energy, Captain Rickover, more than any other individual, is responsible for the rapid development of the nuclear ship program… His efforts have led to the laying of the keel of the world’s first nuclear powered ship well in advance of its original schedule.
