Summary

[edit]
Description 330-PS-2814: USNS Barrett (T-AP-196) – A New Military Service Troopship. The 17,000 ton USNS Barrett was originally designed for the American President lines and was launched June 27, 1950 as the SS President Jackson. With the outbreak of the Korean conflict, this modern designed passenger liner was designated for service with the Military Sea Transportation Service and her conversion to a troop-ship began. Built by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation, Camden, New Jersey, the Barrett is 533 feet long with a beam of 75 feet, and formally accommodates almost 400 cabin class and more than 1800 troop class passengers. Probably the most outstanding popular feature of the Barrett is her complete air-conditioning. Facilities include a barber shop, diet kitchen, soda fountain, laundry, library, lounges, sick bay, operating room, x-ray room, bacteriological laboratories, a nursery and formula preparation room for dependent children. Storage spaces for ship’s supplies, food, fuel, and equipment permit the ship a cruising range of over 10,000 miles. The Barrett is a single screw ship with a standing speed of 19 knots with geared turbine engines. She is rated at 12,500 shaft horse power. Photograph released June 23, 1952. (5/12/2015).
