Summary

[edit]
Description 330-PS-2610 (USN 440604): USS Pickerel (SS 524) surfacing from a depth of 150 feet with a 48-degree up-angle during a routine training exercise off Oahu, Territory of Hawaii, the Pickerel, commissioned April 4, 1949, at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, established what is believed to be the world record for submerged operations by snorkeling from Hong Kong to Honolulu, a distance of 5200 miles in 21 days. The commanding officer at the time was Lieutenant Commander H.B. Sweitzer, USN. The Navy photographers who made this picture were aboard USS Sabalo (SS 302). While the Pickerel was submerged and preparing to surface, Sabalo kept her under sonar “observation” and the sonar delivered the changing relative bearing of the Pickerel to the photographers, enabling them to be approximately aimed at the Pickerel when she broke the surface. The purpose of this operation was to further evaluate the capabilities and characteristics of a Type II Guppy-Snorkel submarine. Photograph released March 1, 1952. (5/19/2015).
