Summary

[edit]
Description 330-PS-2419 (USN 708461): USS Ernest G. Small (DD 838). Efficiency in damage control is credited with saving the destroyer when she struck a mine off the coast of Korea on October 7, 1951. The bow of the destroyer was loosened by the blast and started to shake herself to pieces, endangering the rest of the ship. The watertight bulkhead just astern of the break was checked for possible leaks. The watertight bulkhead held out the seas while the destroyer steamed to Japan for temporary repairs. The visit to Japan was temporary and the repairs were completed at Long Beach, California. The bow of unconstructed Seymour D. Owens (DD 767) was grafted to her hull, and was then converted to a radar packet ship, receiving the designation DDR 838 in July 1952. Photograph released December 18, 1951. (5/26/2016).
