| Description | 330-PS-191 (USN 707675): First Night Carrier Landings Made by Jets. First night carrier landing for jet aircraft in history was made February 28, 1950, on USS Valley Forge (CV 45) at sea off the coast of California. Limited visibility and poor depth perception at night makes night landing difficult. With jet aircraft both problems are magnified. The higher landing speed of approximately 115 MPH means the landing signal officer on deck has to signal the jet pilot to reduce all power at a point further from the edge of the flight deck than is necessary with propeller-driven aircraft. Commander Harvey P. Lanham, Commander Air Group Five, made the first landing in his sleek Grumman Panther Jet carrier fighter. Jet pilots made fifteen other landings the same night.
