Description 330-CFD-DM-SD-03-09962: World War II (WWII) area photograph of US Marine Corps (USMC) Major (MAJ) George C. Axtell, Commanding Officer, Second Marine Air Wing Fighter Squadron, the "Death Rattlers". This photograph was taken at Marine Corps Air Depot, Miramar, California (CA). MAJ Axtell was awarded the NavyCross and is an ace pilot credited with 6 kills. His hometown is Baden, Pennsylvania, 12/6/2002. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
