2020 rolls into 2021 and the Covid-19 pandemic continued to drastically reduce both international travel options as well as with the UK. A 6 month gap of no leisure rail journeys in the UK was finally back on the agenda as lockdowns were ended, millions vaccinated and people started to get back out and travel. Three days of very warm, sunny weather saw me do a mini trip around the UK including a long overdue trip to South Wales. Arriving into Cardiff Central via electric traction from London Paddington saw one of GWR's "Castle Class" sets formed of 2 x class 43 HST power cars and 4 x Mk 3 trailers. Leading power car is 43188 named "Newport Castle" with traditional red cast nameplate alomg with "The Welshman" / "Geraint Thomas". Opposite end is unnamed 43171. Train was 2C73, 11:00 Cardiff Central to Taunton seen on 31 May 2021. |
