Autumn 2021 saw me head off to Spain for the first rail trip in 15 years. Primarily to cover approximately 2,000 of high speed lines that had been constructed over the last decade or so. It was a trip that involved some detailed planning and pre-booking seats on all but local suburban trains in the cities. Fortunately the Covid situation in both Spain and France was low case rates, everything fully open and the locals taking precautions such as masks very well. Basic journey was flying in to Málaga. After weaving across Spain, I headed back via TGV through from Perpignan in France before returning to London via Eurostar. Several new classes of trains were seen for the first time, though still many ones from previous trips were in service. A big downside was lack of photography. Access to platforms in Spain is restricted by tickets and for High Speed, passengers are security checked first before ticket inspection. Additionally, state run RENFE use numerous security guards. Although I did did not encounter any problems, overall it was a trip with very a limited photographic record. Seen here at Málaga-María Zambrano on 30 October 2021 is class 599 3-car diesel set no 599020 used on Media Distance services. These run on the traditional Iberian gauge 1668mm lines. |
