Title |
2nd century plate brooch |
||
Description |
English: A copper-alloy Roman brooch. An oval plate brooch of 2nd century AD date. The plate measures 28.2mm wide by 22.1mm high and 2.9m thick. It has a raised rim around its outer edge and a second surrounding a recessed oval cell at the centre. This cell measures 18.3mm wide by 12.6mm high and is empty. The space in between the central cell and the outer rim is decorated with a repeating lozenge pattern and still retains most of its original gilding. On the reverse are the pin attachment and catchplate. These are situated at opposite ends of the plate (on the long axis) and are both largely intact. The pin attachment consists of a vertical plate with a rounded upper edge and a central circular hole containing a stain from the now-missing iron pin. The catchplate comprises a vertical plate with a slightly rolled upper edge and a stepped inner edge. The reverse of the brooch is heavily corroded. The brooch weighs 6.04g. |
