2nd C. fish brooch - illustration |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper-alloy brooch of probable 2nd century date in the form of a stylized fish - probably a salmon. It is decorated with a number of chevrons down the centre of the fish. These chevrons represent scales and are recessed, as are the eye and gills, no doubt to hold enamel, no trace of which survives. There are three fins, two on the under-side of the fish and one on the back, towards the tail. The tail has been sharply bent round. At first it was thought that this was a post-depositional event (eg, plough damage), but it may also have been done deliberately at the time of use, in order to give the impression of the fish swimming.
The reverse is plain. There is a lug at the tail end to which the pin (missing) would have originally been attached. At the head end is a slightly damaged catchplate.It measures 36.4mm long, by 10.8mm wide (max width of body) and 1.2mm thick. Weight = 3.05g. |
