Title |
2nd C. Plate brooch |
||
Description |
English: Damaged copper-alloy Roman brooch. Plate brooch of 2nd C. AD date. The plate is oval in shape and measures 28.9mm long by 25.8mm wide and 0.9mm thick. Its upper surface has a slightly raised outer rim and an oval inner rim. This creates a central cell, which is empty and has been damaged, and an outer ring containing traces of a blue enamel infill. The reverse of the plate is undecorated. The pin is now missing but would originally have been aligned with the longest axis of the brooch. The pin attachment consists of a single half oval protrusion, set at a right angle to the plate and containing a central hole. An iron bar sits within this hole and is held in place by a small copper-alloy stop on each end. The pin rest is located at the opposite end of the brooch and is damaged. The remaining portion is sub-rectangular in shape and also protrudes from the plate at a right angle. The weight of the object is 6.04g. |
