Title |
2nd C. AD Roman brooch - view 3 |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper-alloy brooch with silver beaded border. Probable 2nd C. AD date, although no exact parallels have been found. The "bow" is very angular in design (rectangular recess) and tapers in width from 9.3mm at the top, to 7.5mm at the point where it meets the foot and the catchplate. The head is distinctive in that it is only marginally wider than the body of the brooch (ie. it is not a T-shaped brooch). The pin attachment would have been contained within a recess under the head of the brooch. No pin or axis bar remains but staining suggests that it was made of iron wire.
At the point where the head of the brooch and the "bow" meet there is a wide moulded transverse rib and, above this, a transverse beaded silver line. The reverse of the "bow" is decorated by means of a roughly rectangular recess which measures 6.8mm wide at the top (6.0mm at the bottom), by 12.7mm long and 1mm deep. Two raised circular knobs sit within this depression, one above the other, and would have served to secure a glass or enamel inset. Very faint traces of red decoration are visible within the recess. The foot of the brooch tapers gradually towards a simple cast knob at the very bottom and is circular in section. The catchplate extends outwards from underneath the foot and is also very angular in design. Overall the brooch measures 34.6mm high, by 13.1mm wide. Weight = 7.03g. |
