Summary

[edit]
Description

The Tano Bora cheetahs were a coalition of five male cheetahs that lived in the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. They were named after the Maa word for "The Magnificent Five". The coalition consisted of two pairs of brothers and a lead male.

The Tano Bora cheetahs first came to the attention of the world in 2016. The coalition quickly became a favourite among wildlife enthusiasts, and they were featured in many documentaries including one by David Attenborough “7 Worlds, One Planet”.

He said: “Here, in Kenya, cheetahs have formed an unusual alliance.

These swiftest of cats usually hunt in groups of two or three, but this team of five is one of the largest ever recorded. Two sets of brothers and a lead male have now lived and hunted together for almost three years. By teaming up, they can hold the best territory in the area.”

The Tano Bora cheetahs were not without their challenges. In 2021, one of the members, died and the remaining four cheetahs continued to live together, but they were never the same. In February 2022, another was killed and later in July a 3rd also died probably killed by lions. The remaining two cheetahs are still alive, but are no longer the dominant force in the Mara.

The Tano Bora cheetahs were a remarkable group of animals, they were the largest known male cheetah coalition in the Maasai Mara and were known for their incredible hunting skills, often taking down prey much larger than themselves. They defied the odds by living together in a coalition of five, and they inspired people all over the world with their story of friendship and perseverance. They will be remembered as one of the most iconic cheetah coalitions of all time.
