Description
English: Silver sewing thimble. A squashed and incomplete silver thimble with a decorative arrangement of indentations and an inscription. The top of the thimble is missing and it has been cut through vertically at one side. The circular hand stamped indentations are arranged in three rectangular blocks, each flanked by incised vertical lines. Each block has a blank diagonal band within it (running from top left to bottom right). Above the lower edge of the thimble is and inscription running around the girth. The inscription reads: D C : March 26 : 1649 : Niglect noe time: Date: Post-medieval - 1649 Dimensions: 21.03 mm x 24.01 mm x 0.85 mm (thickness of thimble wall) Weight: 5.81 g POTENTIAL TREASURE FIND 2008 T132

Report on post-medieval silver thimble from Buckland Newton, Dorset 2008 T132 by Dr Dora Thornton, Curator of Renaissance Collections

Crushed and incomplete silver thimble, dome missing. Decorated on the body with waffle-shaped indentations leaving a zig zag pattern in reserve. On the rim, inscription in italics: "D.C.March 26 1649. Night (?) noe time".

The thimble's form and decoration is of classic late 17th Century type as frequently reported through the Treasure Act, but is unusual in bearing a precise date as well as owner's initials.

Late 17th Century. As such, due to its age and precious metal content, this object qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
