Summary
[edit]Description29.05.92 Michaelstein 171.012 (5993954819).jpg |
The Rübelandbahn operating originally from Blankenburg (Harz) to Tanne opened in the 1880s with steep inclines of up to 60%. Electrified in the 1950s at 15kV ac despite not connecting up to any electrified line at the lower end at Blankenburg. A fleet of locos, class 251 in the DR numbering scheme being renumbered to class 171 when merged with DB was built for the line being allocated to the depot at Blankenburg. The section beyond Königshutte to Tanne closed in 1968 and passenger services were cutback to Elbingerode (Harz) in 1999. From 2000, passenger trains were handed over to class 218 diesels as the 171s were not compatible with the door closing equipment on the rolling stock. The class 171s remained in service on freight traffic until 2004. Privatisation of the line was soon after, the new owner being Havelländische Eisenbahn (HVLE). Sadly passenger services were stopped and freight is now worked by a mixture of electric locos and diesels. This photo was taken on my visit to the line on 29 May 1992. 171.012 ran round the train where the line reverses at Michaelstein whilst working train 16435, 11:20 Königshütte (Harz) to Blankenburg (Harz). |
