2854 copper alloy figurine of a cockerel
Description
English: A Roman cast copper alloy figurine of a cockerel height 29mm, width 25mm, thickness 11mm, weight 17.8g. The main body in semicircular in plan with furled wings, on the surface of the wings are lateral lines that represent the feathers. A large curved tall protrudes from the rear, the feathers are represented but a series of curving deep groves and pronounced ridges. The neck extends vertically form the body, however, the head is heavily corroded removing all detail. The bird is standing upright on two legs, the left is slightly forward of the right and at he bottom is a small circular stand which the cockerel is mounted on. Cockerels are associated with the god Mercury, this may have been used in a small shrine or temple within a house.
