Summary

[edit]
Description

Another "in and out" station on the London Fenchurch Street to Shoeburyness line. Built to serve the many passenger steamship services that departed from Tilbury docks. For many years dedicated boat trains from London St Pancras taking the route via Kentish Town and Barking. In addition, Tilbury Riverside provided connections with the ferry service to Gravesend in Kent which for many years run by British Rail shipping division (Sealink) until 1984.

At the time of this visit on 28 January 1984, most EMU worked trains took the route through Tilbury Riverside although by 1986 other than a few peak hour trains, the station was served by a shuttle service from Upminster via Grays. The station was finally closed in 1992 and the surrounding area has ironically been redeveloped into the London Cruise Terminal. Passengers are now advised to access the terminal via a taxi from nearby Tilbury Town station.

Seen here is class 302 no. 302.240 having arrived on the on a service from London Fenchurch Street. Class 302 EMUS (previously AM2) were delivered in the late 1950s and spent their entire life on services back and forth from London to Shoeburyness. They were all withdrawn by 1999 being replaced for a few years by class 310 EMUs. Nowadays the services are in the hands of class 357 Electrostar units.
