Description

279 Central Park West (left) at West 88th Street and the St. Urban apartment building at 285 Central Park West (right) at West 89th Street in the Upper West Side neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City.

  • 279 Central Park West was built in 1987-90 as an apartment building and a home for the Walden School, a private day-school. The 23-story building of limestone and brick over a steel frame was designed by Constantine Kondylis in the Modern style. It replaced the Progress Club, built in 1902-04 and designed by Luois Korn, which was later converted to the Walden School.
  • The St. Urban was built in 1904-1905 and was designed by Robert T. Lyons in the Beaux-Arts style. The 12 story building has a mansard roof, and a limestone, birck, terra-cotta and copper facade over a steel frame.
Both buildings are located within New York City's Upper West Side-Central Park West Historic District, and the St. Urban is a contributing property to the Federal Central Park West Historic District.
