Aftera 3 hour bus journey from Rokiškis to Kaunas (which was considerably quicker than by train) I continued on to cover some required track in the area. At the time of visiting, trains were only able to leave from the south end of the station at Kaunas. This was because of re-gauging work in the tunnels (seen in the background of the photo) as part of the Rail Baltica project. With trains to Vilnius starting from Palemomas, passengers were directed to local buses for connections. Trains to the border station of Kybartai were still able to run, 4 services a day serve towns and villages along the route which also sees through trains to and from Kaliningrad which is the Russian enclave. In addition, the route is busy with freight traffic as Kaliningrad is the only ice-free seaport on the Baltic Sea coast. Trains traverse Lithuania/Belarus running non-stop to/from Vilnius and take a non-electrified line which bypasses Kaunas. Seen here on 27 May 2019 is RVR built set with DR1AM-3183 leading on train 695, 15:05 Kaunas to Kybartai. |
