Description

One of my objectives of a visit to the former East Germany in May 1992 was to cover several of the narrow gauge, steam operated systems. At the time it was not known what their fate might be, so better safe than sorry I covered them. Fortunately all have survived and best part of 20 years later they are still operating today albeit in private hands as tourist railways.

Two lines in the northern part of the former East Germany include this one from Bad Doberan through to Ostseebad Kühlingsborn West. Having run round, 099.902 is ready to work train 14137, 09:06 Ostseebad Kühlingsborn West to Bad Doberan on 26 May 1992.

The system is unique to the German systems being 900mm gauge, hence locos are numbered in the 099.9xx series. Known as the Bäderbahn Molli (or just "Molli") it is famous for the street running section through Bad Doberan soon after leaving the station it connects to the rest of the DB network. The operation was taken over in 1997 and today services are in the hands of Mecklenburgische Bäderbahn Molli GmbH.
