Description

June 2016 sees a 9-month closure of the eastern section (South Tottenham to Barking) of the busy Gospel Oak to Barking route. This is to allow electrification work to take place for both the frequent passenger service operated by London Overground as well as freight traffic. From September 2016, the western section from South Tottenham to Gospel Oak is also closed with the full line re-opening in 2017. The service will resume, but continue with the 172s "under the wires" until new Class 710 EMUs are introduced in 2018

Late May 2016 I paid a "farewell" visit to some of this local route to see the 2-car Class 172 "Turbostar" DMUs used on these services. The 172s were built for London Overground and introduced in 2010 replacing Class 150 "Sprinter" units. The 8 sets are sufficient to cover a 15 minute interval most of the day with one additional set used in the morning and evening peak.

Part of the line improvements will see many of the platforms shortened over the years re-extended to accommodate 4-coach EMUs when they are introduced in 2018.
