At the time of this visit , the line from Kjustendil to Gjueshevo saw two round trips on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sunday. This basically became the centrepiece of my trip plan. The line climbs up into hilly terrain working its way close to the border with the Republic of Macedonia. Stations are all unstaffed with the exception of Gjueshevo itself. Hopefully the Red Cap employed here, doesn't need to be in work on the 4 days there are no passenger trains. Seen here is 2-car Desiro railcar 10030 with 10029 behind waiting departure of train 60264, 15:55 Gjueshevo to Kjustendil on 24 October 2018. Note the long line of stored coaching stock indicating there was probably once some freight traffic on the line. Some rail atlases show a projected extension of the line from Gjueshevo over the border into the Republic of Macedonia and has been formally agreed on by Governments of both countries. |
