The purpose of the handbook was to give officers and enlisted men of the U.S. Army a better understanding of their principal enemy in Europe, and the material was based on information available up to 15 February 1945. The illustrations show Wehrmacht uniforms etc. of Nazi Germany during the Second World War, i. e. for the men in the Heer (German Army), the Kriegsmarine (German Navy), and the Luftwaffe (German Air Force), as well as uniforms of the Waffen-SS (Armed Elite Guard). The U.S. Government produced material was originally restricted but later declassified. The document is now in the Public Domain and can be shared under the Creative Commons license.
