Description 92 of these sliding door fitted 3-car EMUs were introduced in 1949. This followed electrification of the Great Eastern line from London Liverpool Street as far as Shenfield. Originally 1500V dc, the route was converted to 25kV later on in the 1950s with sections under low bridges at 6.25kV. The units were all withdrawn by 1981, the year this photo was taken at London Liverpool Street. They were replaced by class 315 units.
