Summary

Description

English: Information board about the excavation in the Archaeological Museum in Archanes Fourni: Clay coffins of different types, funerary pithoi, funerary vessels and a child's coffin, all with the bones of the dead, just as they were found in different funerary buildings in the cemetery. The coffin with two interments, a mature man and a young woman, and the skeleton on the stone pavement were found in Funerary Building 18 and date to around 1800 BC. The contracted ('embryonic') position of the bodies is noteworthy and shows that this was done while they were still warm, before the onset of rigor mortis, so that they would fit into the coffins and the pithoi. (See display board V and showcases 4-6.).
