Summary
[edit]Description2021 Alexandria City Hall, South Royal Street (west) facade.jpg |
English: Alexandria City Hall, also known as the Alexandria Market House & City Hall, located at 301 King Street at the corner of South Royal Street in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, was originally built in 1817 as a three-story brick building along South Royal Street, which included a clock tower designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe. This building was gutted by a fire in 1871, and a duplicate was built to replace it, from plans by Adolf Cluss. The new building discarded as many wooden or otherwise combustible elements of the original building as possible: it was constructed from brick with cast iron columns, and rolled iron beams and trusses with roofs made of metal or slate. Architect Benjamin F. Price drew up plans to duplicate the Latrobe clock tower. Construction on the new building began in 1872 and was completed in sections through at least 1873. The Alexandria City Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. |
